At any time, a practitioner can perform a progress check on a child or group of children from the eyLog app. This can help the key person to plan future activities for a specific child or group.

Viewing an Individual Child’s Progress Tracker

Select a child and click on ‘Progress Check’.

This will load the individual progress tracker screen showing the filter options available. By default, the date selected will be today’s date, click on the date and use the drop-down calendar to choose to see a snapshot of the child’s progress as of any other date.

Once you click ‘View’, data from the child’s published observations will be picked up to produce a report of the progress made by that individual child against each of the seventeen EYFS Aspects. The progress is indicated in the form of the Age Band that the child is operating at as of the chosen date and colour coded to the current assessment level (i.e., Emerging, Developing, Secure).

Note: The Progress Tracker will only show data if an assessment level has been marked for an Age Band. If you have linked an observation to specific EYFS statements but NOT marked the Age Band as Emerging, Developing or Secure this will NOT be reflected in the progress tracker.

You can view the tracker by ‘As per Latest Assessment’ or ‘As per Highest Assessment’ which can be switched between at the top of the screen by clicking ‘View’. ‘As per Highest Assessment’ will always show the highest Age Band/assessment level recorded for the child. ‘As per Latest Assessment’ will show you the most recent Age Band/assessment level in the learning journey. The latter is useful if for some reason the child has regressed in their progress.

You can also tap on the ‘Age Band’ column next to each Aspect to see who the observation was by and the date which the assessment was made.

Making a Comparison for an Individual Child

A comparison can be made between up to four dates for an individual child (for example the start of each term).

Click on ‘Progress as of’ and select ‘Compare’ in the selection box.

Click on the date fields and use the calendar to change the comparison dates, then click ‘Set Date’. To add or remove dates click on the ‘+’ and ‘-‘ buttons.

Once you click ‘View’, this will generate a progress report showing a snapshot of the child’s development as of the dates selected. The progress tracker will now show the number of points progressed/regressed by the child against each learning aspect. The progress is shown by an arrow followed by the number of steps increase/decrease the child has made.

Note: Each step of progress across the assessment levels (Emerging, Developing and Secure) within an age-band as well as movement across an age-band is considered as one point of progress achieved by the child.

When you touch the screen, magnifying options will appear in the bottom right corner which can be used to zoom in/out.

Viewing the Group Progress Tracker

Group progress trackers can be viewed for either all children in the nursery or a group/room of children. The group progress tracker displays the progress of all the children across all 17 Aspects of EYFS on a single screen. This may be helpful when planning activities for all the children in a group.

From the Children List screen click on ‘Progress Check’ without selecting an individual child.

This will load the group progress tracker screen showing the filter options available. By default, the date selected will be today’s date, click on the date and use the drop-down calendar to choose to see a snapshot of the children’s progress as of any other date. You can also change the group/room by clicking on ‘Key Children’ in the top left corner and choosing from the available options.

The results can be further filtered by specific groups of children such as Boys, Girls, SEND, EAL etc. Click on the ‘All’ field to select from the available options. The ‘As per Latest Assessment’ and ‘As per Highest Assessment’ options are also available on the group progress tracker.

Once you click ‘View’, the data from the children’s published observations will be used to produce a report showing each of their progress against all seventeen EYFS Aspects. Like the individual progress tracker, the progress is indicated in the form of the Age Band that the child is operating at as of the chosen date and colour coded to the current assessment level (i.e., Emerging, Developing, Secure). This can be used to judge if all the children in a group/room are working at around the same level and highlight any variances.

In addition to the Age Band and assessment colours, the coloured bars shown across the bottom of each Age Band indicates whether a child is working behind, within or ahead within an Aspect. The system calculates this by comparing the child’s age as of the tracker date (seen under their name) to the Age band brackets they have been assessed in and caters for the overlapping of Age Bands.

For example: Fletcher is 26 months…

  • In Making Relationships, he has been assessed in 30-50 Age Band so the bar is blue indicating he is in an Age Band ahead of expected
  • In Self Confidence & Self Awareness, he has been accessed in 16-26 Age Band so the bar is yellow showing his age falls with the Age Band brackets
  • In Managing Feelings and Behaviour, he has been accessed in 8-20 Age Band so the bar is red indicating he is in an Age Band behind expected

This feature is only meant as a guideline to help identify any areas of concern at a glance, you as the practitioner know the children and may have a better understanding of the reasons for any discrepancies.

Note: These colours can be customised from the Manager login so may appear differently here.

Making a Comparison for a Group of Children

A comparison can be made between two dates for a group of children (for example the start and end of term).

Click on ‘Progress as of’ and select ‘Compare’ in the selection box, then click on the date and use the calendar to change the comparison dates, click ‘Set Date’.

Once you click ‘View’, this will generate a progress report showing all the children’s development as of both the dates selected. Here we split the table into Prime Areas and Specific Areas underneath.

The progress tracker will again show the number of points progressed/regressed by the child against each Aspect. The progress is shown by an arrow followed by the number of steps increase/decrease the child has made. At the bottom of the report is a total row where the system breaks down the number and percentage of children that have increased/decreased over the defined time.

Note: A legend is shown at the bottom of each progress tracker screen for your reference.

Analysis for a Group of Children

The third option available on the group progress tracker is an Analysis view. Here the movement made by various groups of children, such as boys, girls, EAL children, SEND children, etc, can be compared and analysed. The analysis view is an extension of the comparison view and shows the average progress achieved by groups of children over a chosen period. The average number of steps is calculated and shown on a bar chart. Click on the ‘Compare’ box and select ‘Analysis’, then click on the date and use the calendar to change the dates, click ‘Set Date’.

The analysis view works against an individual learning Aspect. Once ‘Analysis’ has been selected click on ‘Managing Relationships’ to choose an EYFS learning Aspect. You can also change the group/room by clicking on ‘Key Children’ in the top left corner and choosing from the available options.

Once you click ‘View’, this will generate the bar chart for the average number of steps of progress made by these specific groups as per your selection. You can also tap on an individual graph bar to see a count of the average number of steps of progress made by that group.
